The alliance: what is AL MAR?

An alliance born in Latin America and the Caribbean

AL MAR is an inter-institutional network of universities with broad experience and capabilities in maritime and coastal matters, created as a strategic initiative of Universidad del Magdalena and inspired by the European consortium SEA-EU, adapted to the realities and challenges of Latin America and the Caribbean.

It is a mechanism for academic, scientific and social cooperation that aligns efforts around the Blue Economy, ocean sustainability and integral regenerative development. Its purpose is to consolidate a network of excellence with regional impact on the coastal and maritime communities of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Train for the Blue Economy
Strengthen academic and scientific capabilities in the Blue Economy through the joint design and implementation of microcredentials, continuing-education, undergraduate, master's and doctoral programmes, and the development of collaborative research.

Move knowledge across the region
Boost academic mobility and regional cooperation by creating an exchange programme inspired by the Erasmus model.

Generate impact in the territories
Generate social, economic and environmental impact through regional programmes focused on equity and inclusion for coastal communities.

Recognize ancestral knowledge
Promote interculturality and ancestral knowledge, incorporating the views of Indigenous, Afro-descendant and local communities into the governance of the maritime-coastal territory.

Strengthen regional maritime governance by aligning AL MAR's efforts with bodies such as the Andean Parliament, CAN, the Association of Caribbean States and MERCOSUR, among others.
